Upcoming Schedule at a Glance:

November 14: Christine Di Bella and Jessica Crouch presenting at DLF in St. Louis

December 1: Survey responses due for the ArchivesSpace training topics survey

December 6: Live Demonstration: Overview of the ArchivesSpace Application and Membership Benefits

We continue to gather up development and testing work for the next release. While the vacancy in our Technical Lead position will have an impact on timing, we do expect to put out the next release of ArchivesSpace later this fall. New development is always up on our test server at https://test.archivesspace.org/staff/

Change Your Clocks, Check Your ArchivesSpace

Daylight Saving Time approaches for many this time of year, and some may recall that it can have weird effects not just on humans, but also on ArchivesSpace deployments. Generally, the effects on ArchivesSpace are experienced only when an hour is lost (“spring forward”), not when an hour is gained (“fall back”). If you notice your ArchivesSpace behaving strangely around this kind of time change, we suggest you first do the following:

  1. Check the archivesspace.out logs.
  2. Only if you see DatabaseError: Java::JavaSql::SQLException: HOUR_OF_DAY: 1 -> 2

Run this small MySQL update to update records created in a day/time that doesn’t exist due to the change in time:

UPDATE user set user_mtime = NOW(), system_mtime=NOW();

3. Restart ArchivesSpace.

This should ensure any problematic records now belong to a time that actually exists.

Also, remember that ArchivesSpace members are eligible for technical support. If you’re a member and experience any difficulties, we encourage you to reach out for assistance.

ArchivesSpace v3.5.0 will include a fix to this problem, but unfortunately that release will not be out until after October/November 2023’s round of Daylight Saving Time updates. It will be there by the March 2024 round of updates – good news for both ArchivesSpaces and people.

Announcing the ArchivesSpace Annual Report for 2022/2023

The ArchivesSpace team is pleased to share the ArchivesSpace annual report covering the 2022/2023 membership term. The report highlights some major themes of our activities, both in the last year and always. Thanks for all you’ve done and do to sustain and move the application and the community forward.

We encourage you to share this annual report with others at your institutions and anyone else with an interest in ArchivesSpace. We hope that it may be especially helpful in conveying the value of ArchivesSpace, and the value of ArchivesSpace membership, to resource allocators and other decision makers at your institutions.

We welcome feedback and ideas on this or future annual reports. Please feel free to email us at ArchivesSpaceHome@lyrasis.org at any point.

Participation Requested: Selecting the 2024 ArchivesSpace Training Topics

Thank you to everyone who attended an ArchivesSpace community-wide training this year.  The Trainers Corps is currently developing the 2024 training schedule and is requesting community input to help determine future training topics.  A survey for this purpose is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HXQMDP6. Survey responses are due by December 1, 2024.

Responses to this survey will be used by the Trainers Corps to prioritize offering the top 3 selections over the course of the next year. Please note that in addition to the topics listed on the survey, the Trainers Corps is committed to offering a Basics training in 2024.

ArchivesSpace community-wide training sessions will be 2-3 hours in length, depending on the topic.  These trainings are offered for a fee but ArchivesSpace members receive a substantial discount.
