Meet ArchivesSpace User Advisory Council Member: Regina Carra

Regina Carra
American Folk Art Museum
User Advisory Council Member
First Year on Council
Sub-teams: Users Documentation, Member Engagement

Why did you join the Technical or User Advisory Council?

I am not a long-time user of ArchivesSpace. I began participating in the community shortly after I started at the American Folk Art Museum in November 2019 and found that I really enjoyed speaking with fellow ArchivesSpace users at webinars and other informal events. I joined the UAC to give back to this community, and to support lone-arrangers and Museum archivists, like myself, use ArchivesSpace and its user community to its fullest potential.

What do you like most about being a member of the council?

I enjoy getting to know the other council members and working with them to make ArchivesSpace better. It’s very satisfying to set a goal and complete a task as a team.

What is one thing you wish you knew before joining the council?

I wish I would have known more about the extent of the council’s role in maintaining and developing the ArchivesSpace program. I didn’t quite realize how important council is to my experience as an ArchivesSpace user, until I became a member of the council.

Are you a leader for the council or any of the sub-teams? Tell us a little about this work.

I am the co-lead of the Member Engagement Subteam. The Member Engagement Subteam is exciting because it is a brand new subteam of the UAC this year! My role as a sub-team leader, particularly this year, is to set the foundation for the subteam moving forward. This includes making sure we have strong documentation about our work on new initiatives, such as the Member Match Program. I am also charged with sharing out for our subteam at various meetings and on reports.

Tell us more about your role with ArchivesSpace at your institution.

I am a lone arranger at the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM). I work within the Collections Department with other colleagues but I am solely in charge of everything having to do with the AFAM Archives, including using and maintaining our ArchivesSpace instance.

Why did you join the Technical or User Advisory Council?

I joined the council for several reasons, I wanted to contribute to the community, meet other like-minded people and believed my involvement would enhance my knowledge and use of ArchivesSpace.

What do you like most about being a member of the council?

I enjoy the conversation and the dedication of other members and I have learned a lot about ArchivesSpace. I feel that I have achieved my reasons for joining the council and would continue to participate as long as I am able.

What is one thing you wish you knew before joining the council?

I wish I had known more about both Confluence and Github which I have not had reason to use previously.

As the digital archivist, I develop policies for acquiring digital assets, establish protocols for different digital asset structures and formats, manage the preservation system and its integration with ArchivesSpace by aligning our processing and cataloging workflows to incorporate digital assets.

Sub-teams: Metadata Standards, API Ad Hoc Working Group

Why did you join the Technical or User Advisory Council?

To help guide the development of ArchivesSpace.

What do you like most about being a member of the council?

Thinking about ArchivesSpace outside the parameters of our local installation.

What is one thing you wish you knew before joining the council?

How hard it is to make time for this kind of work; I definitely needed to block out time on my work calendar.

Meet ArchivesSpace User Advisory Council Member: Margaret Turman Kidd

Margaret Turman Kidd
Virginia Commonwealth University
User Advisory Council Member
First Year on Council
Sub-teams: Users Documentation, Testing

Why did you join the Technical or User Advisory Council?

I thought it would be a good way to learn more about how ArchivesSpace is maintained. I also like being able to contribute to a system that is so important in our work.

What do you like most about being a member of the council?

It allows me to gain some new experience and to meet and work with other archivists.

What is one thing you wish you knew before joining the council?

Nothing really surprised me as the people I spoke with gave me an accurate idea of what to expect. Some people may worry that they don’t have enough experience or don’t have anything to contribute, but that isn’t the case. Anyone interested in shaping the on-going development of ArchivesSpace should consider joining the council, no matter their experience level.
